The Neo Classic: A European Icon

When most people picture a cast iron radiator, they likely imagine the Neo Classic. It is the most popular and iconic cast iron radiator in Europe, following on from the earlier Ideal Classic model by the National Radiator Company (NRC).

We’ve received Neo Classic radiators from all kinds of buildings, including Scotland Yard, various public buildings and domestic homes — its refined style and large surface area make it a sleek and efficient piece of heating technology, suited to a wide range of building types.

First introduced during the peak of the Edwardian column radiator era in the early to mid-20th century, the Neo Classic continued to be manufactured well into the 1970s, giving it one of the longest production runs of any cast iron radiator.

Identifying the Neo Classic Radiator

The Neo Classic, introduced around 1930, was available in 2-, 4-, and 6-column variations, a consistency that carried through to the 1967 models, indicating very little change in design throughout its long production life.

There are a few key differences between the Neo Classic and its predecessor, the Ideal Classic. Firstly, the Neo Classic features a more streamlined shoulder (the top section of the radiator). Where the Ideal Classic had a more pronounced, angular shoulder, the Neo Classic offers a rounded, smoother finish, reflecting the more minimalist design preferences of the mid-20th century.

Another distinctive feature of the Neo Classic is the cross brace design between each section. Unlike the square-shaped cross braces of the Ideal Classic, the Neo Classic’s cross braces have a concave shape, giving the radiator a softer, more refined look. This subtle change contributes to the smooth, rounded finish at the top and bottom of each column, contrasting  with the more industrial appearance of the earlier Ideal Classic.
